conversion of an existing concrete world war II gun emplacement structure into a contemporary 2-storey, 4-bedroom villa with gym, spa and cinema. the existing concrete structure is retained but due to its poor condition is overclad with an earth-coloured render. The new structure, clad in white render floats above the old structure with the ‘gap’ expressed as a separating strip of glazing. The forms of the new building draw from the existing footprint of the gun emplacement. The proposed landscaping reflects the defensive earth bunding which partially concealed the gun emplacements from the ground and protected against aerial detection. The ideas were generated whilst working at Bracewell Stirling Architects.
